What is Modi's Gujarat Model Exactly?

Now, you may have heard many times about Modi's Gujarat model of development. What it is about? Is it any useful to country or it is just a hype? How do you decide about it?

No one with right mind can say that Modi will implement all policies of his state. As a enable leader, he will decide about anything based on the situation. But MoneyControl has published an article about What is Gujarat model all about. Excerpt from there:

Going by the agri-GDP growth registered at state-level during the 2000s, Gujarat tops the list with 9.8 percent per annum growth, up from a meagre 2 percent during 1990s.

Compare this with the Kerala model, where agri-GDP growth has been zero for the 2000s (down from 1.3 percent during 1990s). Or with UP or Tamil Nadu or West Bengal models, all of which registered less than 3 percent growth in agriculture during 2000s.”
Gujarat environment is business-friendliness.

There is economic freedom. What is it? Read the article. Link is given below.
Gujarat has topped the Economic Freedom of States in India rankings for the third time in a row.
Gujarat has the lowest “Muslim rural poverty rate among all states. Its overall poverty rate for Muslims (11.4 percent) was far lower than for Hindus (17.6 percent).”
Herein lies the critical differentiator with Gujarat. Both Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu did better than Gujarat on the overall growth story, but Gujarat has excelled in agriculture. What it has done is applied trickle down economics to agriculture – and it has worked.
Aiyar’s conclusion: “Gujarat has good governance. It has social and communal flaws. But it is India's top state in economic and agricultural freedom. That's not hype.”
HDI (Human Development Indicator) is low when think about developed state. It is in middle of the rank in country. It is above Karnataka but lower than Kerala, TN, and Maharashtra.

Clearly, this is where the Gujarat model of trickle down is not good enough to lift the really poor – socially and economically – out of their misery quickly. Here, Modi’s critics do have a point. Gujarat ranks 11th among 23 states in HDI .

Gujarat’s tribal population is nearly 15 percent of the total (14.79 percent, to be exact), which is nearly twice as large as Maharashtra’s (8.87 percent) and more than twice as large as Karnataka’s (6.55 percent), or Andhra Pradesh’s (6.53 percent). Tamil Nadu and Kerala, the states with far better human development indicators than Gujarat, have barely 1 percent tribal population.

The return on investment in public enterprises has doubled under his tenure to seven percent, according to state audit reports. While Modi has hived off the state’s electricity utilities he has not privatised them for fear they will not care for non-creamy customers.”

DTH Services in India - Tata Sky Reviews

Very recently I have subscribed to Tata Sky DTH services. Set-top box got is for HD quality. It is working correctly. Picture quality is almost all the time good. and sound quality is also good.

After using DTH (Satellite TV) services for few days, I saw one common problem that is visible everywhere. and that problem is Advertisement problem. Marketing manager want to feed as much advertisement as they can! I am watching TV at home and I have paid for the service but still they are pushing advertisement aggressively. Whenever I switch on the TV, I see ad. It can be regarding TATA's own channel (Active channels) or other promos. Hungama Channels are advertising there days through Tata Sky. Instead it should display the channel I was watching before switching off the TV!

Few other things I want Tata Sky to consider are:
  • Sound became louder than it was originally. It should be left as TV settings. Or this just become better in clarity and I should lower the volume! Need to check clearly.
  • When I browse channels I can see one channels at a time. It should show 10-15 channels at a time so that I can choose it easily and sooner than going through each channels in long list of channels.
  • While browsing channels, they show TataSky logo in big. While watching the channels (any) they also show Tata Sky logo in big. Why they do these thing. I have already purchased this satellite channel and I am using this service at home, who else is going to see the Tata Sky logo and who will get affected by it! Instead it should show channels name in big font while browsing the channels list, so that I can see the channels name easily from long distance and even when I am not at 90 degree of the screen.
  • After switching on the TV, it should show me the last channels I was watching. and not its own advertisement.
  • Over all there are lots of improvement required in interface for easy navigability. It just say channels not in your plan than showing all channels in my list and telling that this channels is not in you plan. It may happen that this problem will  go away after my free time will end. but chance are less as those channels I cannot watch they are telling that you cannot watch because you are put into this and that package. If they remove all the channels which I cannot watch then I can fast browse channels. They should put all unsubscribed channels in different list so that when I miss something then I can look into that list and subscribe.
  • They must keep in mind the consumer right for their the service they provide.

This list is not a comparison list among different satellite channels provider. There can be high possibility that other DTH service providers are giving worse service or good service. I have not checked other satellite service provider. Overall Tata Sky has good reputation in Bangalore as I felt after listening few.

Bihar Economic Development is Real!

Today's S.A. Aiyar article about Bihar economic development shed light about the current situation on economic status and possible economic development Bihar can see in future. He have mentioned some data that tells that Bihar economic development is true and is well a miracle economy. GDP growth of 8 percent or more is thought to be miracle economy.

Recent statement by few leaders (bad leaders) that Bihar economic development is not a true story but a hogwash is not true and no one has manipulated the growth story of Bihar.
Here you can see the data present in support of the Bihar development:

He not only given CSO data but also thought of the leaders nature and natural process of winning election. For example, he tell that no politician can claim to win election on the basis of economic growth. People's personal experience matter much.

Few more points from the same article:
In Lalu’s time, swaggering goons showed off their guns in public. Today no gunman is visible. The Nitish administration has convicted 38,000 people, including dozens of politicians, some from the ruling party itself — for violating the Arms Act.

The economic miracle has been led by construction, which has averaged a colossal growth rate of 47% per year for the last five years. Government development spending has zoomed from Rs 2,000 crore to Rs 16,000 crore per year.

Most impressive has been the rise in road construction, from 384 kilometres in 2004-05 to 2,417 kilometers in 2008-09. Security plus road and telecom expansion have incubated a boom in small business and domestic construction.

However, large-scale industries has not shown growth. Organized sector output actually fell in the Lalu era from Rs 1,150 crore in 1999-00 to Rs 790 crore in 2004-05 at constant prices, and has stagnated under Nitish. Big industry owner are waiting for election in Bihar. What will be the outcome of
next election will decide the growth of large-scale industries. Many large industries have proposed big investments.

Are you from Bihar? If yes, then you may like to be a member of this Facebook Group!

Professional are Blackmailing Goverment

Professionals are doctors and blackmailing government and doing disservice to the society. Doctors are going to strike very easily and too often.

They are not considering the social implication. Doctors do private practice and earn good amount of money.

When economy was in bad shape then govt taken side of Pilots/ Air hostess. That saved lots of jobs. That time news came as many has taken loan and they cannot pay if their jobs will go. Pilots earns between Rs. 100000 to Rs. 200000 per month.

As a side affect of Raj's tirade against North Indian, Bhojpuri film industry can out of Mumbai. Bhojpuri Film industry is over Rs 200-crore. It provides jobs to lots of workers from Maharashtra. With an average output of 75 movies per annum and an over 250 million target audience, the Bhojpuri film industry employs hundreds of unskilled and semi-skilled people from the state in various stages of production and distribution.

The industry, which has around 50 registered production houses in Mumbai, has initiated talks with some state governments like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar for its set up.

Manoj Tiwari said that despite employing a large number of Maharashtrians, the Bhojpuri film industry was still being targeted for "our connection with north India, even though Bhojpuri films have their audiences across the country."

Bhojpuri film is in demand noy only in India but also have a vast overseas market as the Bhojpuri diaspora is spread over countries like Mauritius, Nepal, Dubai, Ghana, West Indies, Fiji, Indonesia, Surinam and the Netherlands.

Business in Nuclear Energy Deal (123 Agreement)

India’s nuclear energy sector has $50 billion potential over the next 1-15 years. Industry sectors have begun to lobby with the government just after the 123 Agreement# pact to permit private sector entry in the industry. Indo-USA nuclear deal passed the USA Congress floor test on Oct 2, 2008.

Indian Corporate in power sector and heavy engineering started negotiating with foreign companies for nuclear power generation. This 123 nuclear deal will help lots of Indian companies to get business as main player and/or player for ancillary part production. Big multinational companies will get business in providing reactors and nuclear supply. This development will benefit infrastructure and power sector companies such as NTPC, Jindal, Larsen & Toubro, Tata Power and Reliance Power.

High technology sectors such as semi conductors, advanced manufacturing, precision engineering, defense equipment, advanced and specialty chemicals, electronics, sensors, environmental technology, space, automation and robotics, and Parma will be benefited by this nuclear deal. While some sectors will be helped by removal of restrictions on import of dual technology items and technology, others will get an opportunity to tap the potential created by nuclear trade.

IT can help in terms of software services, data management and control & automation. Also, the R&D skills from the Parma sector may play a crucial role. The R&D staff in Parma is well equipped to handle the sensitive technologies which India will get access to. They may also prove crucial in handling the chemical transformations and temperature control in the nuclear plants.”

However, actual contracts could take more than three to four years as varied issues, such as financial assistance and legal, regulatory and safety issues, are spelt out clearly and local capability is developed

State-owned Nuclear Power Corp of India (NPCIL), the monopoly nuclear power generator, has identified four reactor manufacturers — Westinghouse Electric Company (AP1000 series of reactors), GE-Hitachi (ABWR reactor series), Areva (1,000 mw European pressurized reactors, France) and Russia’s atomic energy agency Rosatom (VVER 1,000 reactors) — as among the frontrunners for new projects planned across the country. This is based on “suitability” of technical parameters for placement of orders that will form the first phase of the Center’s plan to build 40,000 mw of nuclear capacity by 2020.

Reason for your dropped calls: Point of Interconnection (PoI) is higher than benchmark

Point of Interconnection (PoI) parameter signifies the ease with which a customer of one network is able to communicate with a customer of another network. This parameter also reflects as to how effective is the interconnection between the two networks.

For April-June quarter, which said amongst the private service providers Bharti Airtel has the largest number of PoIs having congestion (56 PoIs as of June) followed by Reliance Communications (22 PoIs), Dishnet Wireless (21 PoIs as of March), Vodafone (19 PoIs of March) and Idea (19 PoIs).

The benchmark notified by TRAI in the Quality of Service (QoS) Regulation of July 2005 for this parameter should be less than 0.5 per cent. This means out of 200 calls between two operators only one call should face congestion problem.

The circles/ states more affected due to PoI congestion are Bihar, Maharastra, Gujarat, Haryana, North Eastern states and Himachal Pradesh.

Where is Investment Happening in India?

Infrastructure sectors account for the bulk of investment going into the top ten sectors includes electricity generation, steel, construction, railway transport, road transport, shipping and telecommunications. This is a very good news for long term development in India.

Major sector industries attracted investment, India Today the sector attracting the largest investment is electricity. There are 1,141 outstanding projects involving a total cost of Rs 11,65,928 crore. Of these 261 projects are under implementation, while the rest have been announced or proposed. The second biggest investment draw is the steel industry. It has 310 outstanding projects at a total cost of Rs 5,07,986. Construction comes third with 1,483 projects.
The biggest industries are the capital intensive ones of electricity generation, steel and chemicals. The rush of SEZ construction, along with the nationwide boom in supply of real estate, has given big values for construction, clustered around the largest cities. Large values are seen for the infrastructure of transportation and communication (railways, roads, shipping, telecom).

Delving into each of these industries reveals many interesting features.
major investment projects under implementation, India
In the case of electricity, the biggest projects are the nuclear generation plants made possible by the India-US nuclear deal. The table also shows the continued domination of the public sector in electricity generation, thus highlighting the failure of electricity reforms, which have not elicited adequate interest from the private sector. The table with large railway projects is particularly important because of the potential of railways as the most energy-efficient form of transportation.

Organised food retailing can increase rural income, cut inflation

At an estimated Rs 12.8 trillion in 2006, India's retailing sector makes up close to forty per cent of the country's GDP. Of this, food and grocery (F&G) items account for a significant 74 per cent of total retail sales across both, the organised and unorganised sectors. Only 1% of the food items retailed in India flow through the organised retail channel.

Organised food retailing can increase rural incomes, reduce inflation and increase rural spending power, which would then boost the gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate. A CRISIL Research report on the retail food industry says the total avoidable supply chain costs in the Food & Grocery (F&G) vertical, which accounts for 74 per cent of total retail sales in the Indian organised and unorganised sector, are about Rs 1,00,000 crore. About 57 per cent is due to avoidable wastage and 43 per cent due to avoidable storage and commissions costs.

The F&G vertical comprises fresh fruits and vegetables, milk and milk products, fast moving consumer goods and food grains (staples). Within this, staples and unprocessed fruits and vegetables account for 50 per cent of food retail, amounting to Rs 4,70,000 crore, the CRISIL Research paper says. The distribution costs increase due to the presence of several layers in the supply chain and, coupled with the movement of goods across different states or regions, lead to high wastage — caused by inadequate transportation and cold storage facilities.

Gulf firms eyeing booming Indian retail sector

With a retail boom sweeping India, private entities from the Gulf region are making a bee-line to invest in the sector but are wary of some challenges in the huge and diverse market, according to experts here.
"Over the next two years, India is planning to develop a staggering 518 shopping malls across the country. Typically every 100 miles, the food and language changes, which means that your communications has to be key," Srinath Sridharan, head of lifestyle business and strategic alliances at Wadhawan Holding Private Limited in India was quoted as saying by Gulf News.
The size of the country is another factor that could deter retailers from investing in India, said Shubhranshu Pani, president, retail services at Trammell Crow Meghraj Property Consultants.

"By 2015 almost 72 per cent of the population would be under 35-years-old, which I think will contribute to the highest number of consumers in the world."
